Want to have a lot of fun? A ventriloquist can do just that! You will
laugh at his or her wittty sayings all the time. Is it like playing with
your favorite toys? It might be better! Therefore, read on so as to
discover many interesting things about ventriloquism.
Origins
Did you know that ventriloquism was a religious practice? Yes it was. Ventriloquism is all about speaking from the stomach, so if you hear a dummy talking, it means the stomach of the human being besides the dummy is bringing about the sounds. People thought a ventriloquist could interpret sounds and speak to the dead. Can you believe it? But remember that all this happened in Greece thousands of years ago.
As time passed by, ventriloquism started to become just a performance art. In the 18th century, ventriloquism became sheer entertainment, and you could see tons of ventriloquists at any travelling funfair and in market towns in England. Ventriloquists were really cool people, as they made their sounds appear to come from far away rather than from a puppet, as it is the case today. In the 1900s, puppets started to be incorporated into the performance of ventriloquists all over Europe. Ventriloquism started to become popular in the 1920s in India.
Sounds and Materials
A ventriloquist has to work hard to make us laugh by using a lifeless puppet. For instance, he or she has to keep the lips just slightly separated. In addition, they have to replace the sounds of some letters such as m, b, p and others which are rather complicated. Ventriloquists not only use knee puppets in their performances, but also flexible puppets made of latex and even foam puppets.
The sizes of these puppets vary from human-size to twelve inches. The materials used are also different such as wood and papier-mâché. Latex, neoprene, urethanes, and some resins are also used in modern puppets. Frank Marshall and Theo Mack are some of the most famous makers of puppets.
Inside the Head of a Dummy
Do you want to know what a dummy`s head look like? We are going to let you know right now. Firstly, a mold is made by using molding clay in order to make the dummy`s head. To get just two molds – one for the back half of the dummy`s head, and other for the front half of its head -, plaster of Paris is poured around the clay model. A one-piece mold is created from those two models we have talked about before. The mechanisms that go inside a dummy`s head will be placed in the front half of the head.
Springs, levers, and triggers will be installed in huge amounts. In fact, there will be so much things inside the dummy`s head that the puppet will be able to wink both eyes, move its lips, and so forth. In addition, some puppets will be able to move one lip independent of the other, while others will stick out their tongs. The result: you will have so much fun with these puppets at every performance that you might not wish to go home.
